When I was 11, my mom was diagnosed with stage four lung cancer. Initially both my parents hid this information from me and when they eventually told me, all they told me was that my mom only had a couple months left. As a little girl who knew nothing about what “cancer” is, this terrified me because I couldn’t imagine my life without my mom - the person  to guide me through womanhood and the person who could provide unconditional support. Unfortunately in January 2016, she lost her fight against cancer. Those times were undoubtedly the hardest times ever. Not only did I witness my mom suffer everyday, her hair thinning, her face losing color, her voice becoming weaker, I had to process losing my family member, someone I loved the most, and I watched my dad, someone who swore "real men don't cry," hurting emotionally. This is an experience that no one should ever have to undergo. No one should ever endure the pain of loss or watch their friends, aunts, uncles, siblings, grandparents, or parents suffer from this disease, and no one should ever say the words “I have cancer.” I Relay in honor of my mom and for every person whose life has been touched by cancer in some way.
