UCLA Robot Races

This year, in honor of the Formula 1 races and incredible engineering of our local high school teams, UCLA is hosting Robot Races at this year's Relay For Life event.

HOW IT WORKS

Relay for Life Robot Race Official Competition Rules

Eligibility
  • All teams must be officially registered for the Relay for Life event.
  • Participants under the age of 13 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.
Safety Requirements
Personal safety is the highest priority. The following are required at all times when working on or operating robots:
  • Safety glasses or safety-rated glasses with side shields must be worn. Clear or lightly tinted lenses are preferred
  • Closed-toe and closed-heel shoes are required
  • Long hair must be tied back
Robot General Requirements

Construction & Design
  • Robots must be custom-built. Individual components (motors, controllers, sensors) are allowed. Fully pre-made robot kits are not allowed.
  • Robots may not be designed to intentionally detach parts during operation
  • Robots must remain in contact with the track at all times (no jumping or flying mechanisms)
  • Only rubber or plastic wheels may be used
Safety Constraints
  • No gas, oil, or combustion-based systems
  • No rocket motors
  • No switches or contacts containing liquid mercury
  • No sharp edges, spikes, or adhesives contacting the track
  • No mechanisms designed to damage, obstruct, or delay another robot
Electrical & Power
  • Maximum battery voltage: 12V, more than one allowed
  • Batteries must be securely mounted
  • All wiring must be properly insulated and secured
  • No exposed electrical contacts
Kill Switch
  • All robots must include a kill switch
Lubrication
  • Lubricants may be used
  • Lubricants must not drip or leave residue on the track

Conduct & Sportsmanship
  • Teams must demonstrate respectful and professional behavior at all times
  • Unsportsmanlike conduct may result in disqualification
  • Teams may not interfere with other robots or participants

COMPETITION CATEGORIES

100m Autonomous Robot Race

(Will occur on a straight-away)

  • Rubber or Plastic Wheels
  • Cannot use Gas or Oil
  • Weight Capacity within 5-15lbs
  • Must contain a built in killswitch
  • No spikes, sharp edges, or adhesives can be in contact with the track
  • Must be in contact with the track at all times (no flying or jumping)
  • You may not use RC Car Kits or materials that
    originate from any pre-made kits
  • Be sure to test your robot for safety!

100m Remote-Controlled Race

(Will occur on a curved section)

  • Rubber or Plastic Wheels or Legs
  • Cannot use Gas or Oil
  • 100 lbs weight Capacity
  • Must contain a built in killswitch
  • No spikes, sharp edges, or adhesives can be in
    contact with the track
  • Must be in contact with the track at all times (no flying or jumping)
